The University of Pikeville won its first game against Livingstone (NC) in what showed to be an impressive 52-23 win and a big offensive charge from the Bears last Thursday night, Aug. 30, at the Hambley Athletic Complex.
UPIKE scored early on a pass from Bowen Smith to Arites Clark on a 4th and 14 conversion. Clark had another big night with 5 catches for 113 yards. Later on, Smith found Jordan Owens on a 3-yard touchdown. Smith went 7-15 and two touchdowns on the night.
True freshman Trevon Wofford led the big offensive attack in the second half mainly on the run totaling 168 and 2 touchdowns on just eight carries. He also had two passing touchdowns going 3-4 for 39 yards and an interception. Wofford also connected with Anfernee Brown on his first career touchdown pass.
The UPIKE defense was stellar in the second half holding Livingstone to 100 total yards of total offense.
As a squad, the Bears made 11 tackles for loss, plus two sacks and two interceptions from another standout true freshman in Cedric Thomas. This is the second week in a row a Bears defender has multi-interception game as Taeron Brown did last week in the first half against Keiser.
UPIKE moves on this week as it plays Bethel University at Hambley Athletic Complex this Thursday night in the third straight home game.
