Honors Program adds living learning center

A program with new and improved additions, the UPIKE Honors Program is in its second year of existence. The program has added new aspects this year. The option of residing in a residential hall, Gillespie, with a live-in learning faculty member is now available to students who are members of the UPIKE Honors Program. The Faculty-in-Residence is Johnny Fleming, who is enjoying every minute of residing in Gillespie. “There is always activity in the Residential Hall. The common area is always filled with students which is such a great thing,” Fleming said. “The option of living in a likeminded community is going to catch on.” Fleming thinks it may be possible to implement the live-in learning community as an option for other programs on campus as well. Madi Daniels, who is a sophomore and a returning member of the UPIKE Honors Program, is also a resident of Gillespie Residence Hall. “It’s nice to have the opportunity to live in a residential hall with people who have similar interests and it’s essentially like a small community,” Daniels said. “I think the biggest change is the amount of people and the knowledge of it now. It wasn’t as well-known last year, but I think there has been a lot more promotion for it this year.” The number of members in the program has increased by 17 since last year. There are now 43 members in the UPIKE Honors Program. Freshman Luke Humphrey has had a great experience since beginning his time here at UPIKE. “I really enjoy the aspect of Johnny Fleming living with all of us in Gillespie,” he said. The UPIKE Honors Program is striving for greatness for the future of UPIKE students.
