Saturday Feb. 24 at the East Ky. Expo Center, the UPIKE Women’s Basketball team played a close game against the University of the Cumberlands Patriots. It was Senior Day for the Bears who led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter. Before the half, the Patriots cut UPIKE’s lead down to 27-24 at the break. The Bears were able to tie the game as late as 58-58 in the final minute after a 3-point basket by Junior Adison Corder but they were not able to score on the final possession after Cumberlands took a 60-58 lead. Corder and Jamie Castle led the Bears with 15 points each. Seniors Aundrea Matchen and Rachel Lee also helped the Bears as Matchen chipped in 11 points and Lee grabbed 8 rebounds. The Bears just shot 34 percent from the field which would not be good enough to edge Cumberlands who got by with a 2-point win. The UPIKE women’s team will head into the Mid-South Conference tournament with an overall record of 14-16 (MSC 5-9). They are set to play against Cumberland (Tenn.) at Noon ET on Thursday in the East Ky. Expo Center.
