The UPIKE Bears’ Archery Team placed third in the Mid-South Conference Indoors Championship on Jan. 21. The Bears had two students who finished in the top three in the men’s recurve division. Devin Gayheart finished in first place taking home his first championship, and Zach Johnson finished in third place. The total medal count after the competition was all said and done was seven for the Bears. Those seven medals consisted of one gold medal (Gayheart) and six bronze medals.
The other students who competed and won medals were: Kyle Evans, Zachary Mollett, Dalton Evans, Robert Andre, Ethan Francis, Cody Ratliff, Lauren Bugess, Amber Mayes, Catelynn McNight, and Darcy Ward.
The next event on the calendar for the Archery Team was the United States Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Las Vegas. The only way that any individual on the team could compete in that competition is if he or she shot a score in the top 8 in the nation. Sadly, nobody on the team made it into that elite top 8 to go on to Las Vegas.
“For all us freshmen to be at a new school and starting up a new team, we have done an amazing job for our first year. We’ve been able to keep our grades up and bring home wins at the same time. So, I believe as far as our first year has gone, we’ve done an awesome job,” Johnson said.
