Free tax assistance offered

The time to file your taxes is here, and it’s time to find out whether you owe money to Uncle Sam or get money back from the government. Filing taxes can be a complicated process as well as an expensive one. Luckily, the Coleman College of Business (CCOB) has the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA).
This will be the program’s fourth year, and each year has seen an increase in the number of returns filed. Last year, 175 returns were completed, and this year, 200 are expected.
The VITA offers tax assistance from volunteers who are IRS certified. These services are meant to help low to middle income taxpayers in the community. This includes an income limit of $56,000 and services are by appointment only. Appointments are available on four Saturdays during tax season: Feb. 10, Feb. 17, Feb. 24, and March 24.
