SW holds food drive

Several programs in the Pikeville area are assisting those who are dealing with food insecurity. The traditional time to run a food drive is through the holiday season. The Diversity and Difference class at UPIKE has an assignment for its students, an “action project”.
Students get together in groups, and one group decided to conduct a food drive for Thanksgiving. The purpose of their action project was to address classism. The students had the opportunity to choose one of the “isms” they have discussed in class and come up with a way to address it or “take action” concerning the problem.
The students chose to help local elementary school children who are less fortunate than others have a holiday meal that they may not otherwise receive. Students set out bins throughout campus along with flyers and made post on social media about their food drive. Every other day, they would go and collect from the bins and were successful with receiving food. They finished the food drive Thursday, Nov. 16 and organized the items to send off what goes to the schools.
“We jumped at the opportunity to help the children in this area because we understand that children are more dependent on others such as their parents or teachers for the things that they need. Doing this food drive allowed us to help both the parents and children by working with the local school resource centers that were willing to team up with us,” said senior Samara Calihan.
