Student Life hosts Last Call, alcohol awareness event

Alcohol was a topic of discussion for many students and faculty members on campus this past week after the Office of Student Life hosted an alcohol awareness education program Tuesday, Sept. 27 for the students. This program allowed students to view the effects of alcohol on their body. It also showed how quickly a situation can change. The students drove golf carts, played corn-hole, and participated in obstacle courses all while wearing drunk goggles. Also, they interacted at a “mixer” mock-tail party to show how easy someone could slip something in a drink. At the end of the event, Courtney Dixon, junior, stood up and spoke of a personal incident that changed her life. Her life was impacted greatly after a drunk driver hit her while she was out with family one night. Cards were handed out to everyone that participated that explained the signs of alcohol poisoning. They also listed the number for campus safety and a formula to calculate your BAC. Katie Halsey, alumna, spoke on behalf of all faculty and expressed her concern for safety when under the influence. This new program adopted by the university is expected to have a positive impact on the school and their policies.
