UPIKE holds job fair

Students attended a job fair on the second floor of Armington Thursday, Sept. 29. The purpose of a job fair for people who attend is to make positive first impressions and learn about companies and what it’s like to work for them. Some of the employers that attended were Gearheart Communications, YMCA, Kelloggs, Social Security Administration, Pikeville Medical Center, and Christian Appalachian Project. “This is a great opportunity for seniors especially to start networking and getting our feet in the door,” said Miranda Davis, senior. Sonia Smith, director of career counseling, hopes to hold a professional school and graduate school fair late in October or November, so students can be aware of their options and learn what needs to be done to be accepted. She is planning to hold a “Dress for Success” event this month to offer ACE students the opportunity to learn about how to dress professionally. They will also be trying on outfits. For anybody that needs help in finding a professional outfit, there is a career closet available on Wickham 1 by appointment. It’s available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and staff will try to fit you in within 24 hours. You may contact Smith at soniasmith@upike.edu or by phone at (606) 218-5223 to make an appointment for any career needs, or if you have questions about upcoming career fairs.
