The University of Pikeville welcomes a new addition to the UPIKE family, Visiting Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice Kate Burmon. Burmon got into the field of criminal justice somewhat “backwards.”
Working at a law firm in 2008, Burmon was “thinking about the right direction to go.”
“Art crime was something that had fascinated me,” Burmon said. “So, I started looking into how I could pursue that.”
After speaking to members of the law enforcement community and those in academia, Burmon completed a master’s in art history to go with her master’s in museum studies and is currently completing her Ph.D. in criminology.
Originally from the Boston area, Burmon spent time at a nonprofit organization in Manhattan, The Versailles Foundation, working in the reclamation and restoration of French art.
So far, she likes Pikeville.
“I haven’t gotten too much of a chance to see the town, but it’s great. This is more my pace.” Burmon said, coming from larger cities like Boston and Manhattan.
To the students and faculty, Burmon invites all to “stop by” and see her in her fourth floor office in the Armington Science Center.
“I love to meet folks, … if anyone’s interested in criminal justice or just anything, my door is open,” Burmon said.
