The UPIKE football team traveled to Bluefield, Va., to take on the Bluefield Rams on Thursday, Aug. 25. The Bears showed up ready to play as they put the first points on the board with a 54-yard run from Willie McCloud to go up 7-0.
As the trend would go for the entire game, Bluefield answered back with a nice seven-play drive and scored on a 14-yard run.
With the scored tied at 7, the Bears would turn to the kicker Damir Karapandzic to drill at 20-yard field goal to go up three points before the half with a score of 10-7 Bears.
Again, the Rams would get another touchdown to start the third quarter. This time with another long ten-play drive and scoring with a 2-yard run. This put the Rams up 14-10. The Rams got the first score of the fourth quarter with another 2-yard run after a short five-play drive. Making the score 20-10 Rams. This would be the last score for the Rams, as the Bears’ defense would prove to be too much in the final quarter. The Bears would score two more unanswered touchdowns to go up 24-20.
The defense would have one more tough task as it proves strong with a goal-line stand to finish the game and grab the win by a score of 24-20.
Coach Al Holland gave a quick statement prior to the game which seemed to hold true saying, “An experienced defense will have to have big stops while the young offense finds its rhythm and starts to score.”
