The University of Pikeville women’s and men’s cross country team recently prepared for its first meet at the Mid-South conference invitational on Sept. 10 in Bowling Green, Ky. This specific race identified where they are, in terms of conditioning, and allowed them to familiarize themselves with the course where the conference meet will take place later this season. The Bears returned two female seniors, Molly Frank, who ran a time of 23:27.75, and Jobeth Bingham who ran 25:29.13. All the female runners worked hard and finished the meet showing outstanding passion. For the men’s side, sophomore Jonathan Sloas ran 36:55.80, while Chris Leadford followed him with the time off 40:05.49. “Even though there was extreme heat conditions, they performed at the best of their ability, but there is still room for improvement,” said Coach John Biery. “Progress is rarely a straight line. There are always bumps in the road, but you can make a choice to keep looking ahead,” Kara Gourcher, world class distance runner, once said. The Bears will be competing in the Berea Invitational in Berea, Ky., on Sept. 17.
