UPIKE celebrates Spiritual Emphasis Week on campus
0The University of Pikeville family will set aside special time to celebrate our Christian heritage during Spiritual Emphasis Week, Nov. 9-14. This year’s focus is “Looking Again: Seeing the Familiar in a New Light.”
“Often times people can be lulled into a sense of complacency by the familiar. Husbands forget to say I love you to their wives, children stop thanking their parents and bosses take for granted that employees will work weekend shifts for the sake of the organization,” said Rob Musick, campus chaplain and instructor of religion. “Just as it is in the daily experiences of life, people become too familiar to aspects of spirituality without deeply realizing the radical teaching of Creation and the Bible. This spiritual emphasis week will be about looking at the familiar with new eyes. Come and join our UPIKE family for one or all of these free events.”
On Sunday, Nov. 9, the campus came together for a special 737 service focusing on the signs of John.
Wilma Ann Bailey, Ph.D., professor of Hebrew and Aramaic Scripture at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, was the featured speaker for the Dr. Carol Grizzard Browning Lecture Series on Monday, Nov. 10. Bailey was designated a Regional Scholar by the Society of Biblical Literature and is the author of several books, Bible study guides, articles and essays.
With a spotlight on community service, UPIKE students, faculty and staff participated in a blood drive on Monday, Nov. 10. The drive is hosted by the Kentucky Blood Center and will be held in Booth Auditorium Lobby from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
On Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., in Meditation Chapel, Bailey led a special chapel service. She also presented a second discussion at 7 p.m. in Chrisman Auditorium.
On Wednesday, the campus will view the documentary “For the Bible Tells Me So,” at 7 p.m. in Booth Auditorium. Musick and Pastor Brian Nierman of First Christian Church will lead a discussion following the screening.
The annual “Worship on the Hill,” celebration will be Thursday, Nov. 13. The campus will welcome special guest and UPIKE alum Scott Samarco, youth and young adult pastor of Overflow Church in Benton Harbor, Mich. UPIKE student organization Blessed Unity of God will participate in the service. The event will be held at 7 p.m. in Booth Auditorium.
