Ashley Nicole Estep, originally from Pikeville, teaches developmental reading at UPIKE. In 1998 she moved to Jacksonville, N.C. Later, she resided in Sevierville, Tenn., for six years before returning to Pikeville.
“I wanted to be closer to my family and hometown,” she said.
Estep is married to Donald Estep. They have three children: Jesse, 7; Lauren, 14; and Griffey, 14.
Her hobbies consist of creative writing and crafting. She’s also a sports fan of the Kentucky Wildcats and UPIKE Bears.
She enjoys teaching.
“I was always told I would make a great teacher. Helping others has continually been a priority in my life. After working as a tutor and substitute teacher, I knew teaching would be the ideal job for me,” she said. “I was honored to accept a position as a UPIKE instructor. My teaching style seemed to be effective for college students and those seeking college readiness skills.”
She has enjoyed being back in Pikeville.
“Teaching at UPIKE is a truly rewarding experience. Supportive co-workers and eager students at UPIKE make me feel very welcome here,” she said
If Estep wouldn’t have become a professor, she would have done something with writing.
Her goal in life is “to make a difference, not only in the lives of my own children, but in others as well.”
Estep shared he motto as well. “I always tell my children not to do things in excess, to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, treat others as you would like to be treated, and the grass is not always greener on the other side,” she said.
