Women bowlers win fifth straight tourney, men place 8th

The University of Pikeville women’s bowling team has competed in five events so far this season and finished first in all of them, including another championship on Sunday in the Raider Classic, hosted by Wright State.
The Bears qualified first with a team score of 8,094, which was the only qualifying score above 8,000 pins. From there, the top four teams advanced to the championship round where UPIKE had the high score again in the semifinals of 790 through four team games before routing host Wright State in the finals 392-278.
KT Simpson was the Bears’ top varsity individual performer, tallying 916 pins through five games of Baker play. Behind her was Fallon Tallman in 83rd place with 751 pins being knocked down.
Wright State’s Shannon DeWitt was the individual champion, tallying a score of 1,017, while Martin Methodist’s Regina Laglia was the only other bowler to top 1,000 at 1,007 pins in second place.
The men placed in eighth place in the team standings after knocking down 8,265 pins through five team games and five rounds of Baker play on Sunday.
The top four teams in the standings advanced to a championship round where Ohio State and Morehead State (Ky.) met in the finals with the Eagles winning 389-368.
For the Bears, Matt Diamond was the leader in individual play, finishing eighth overall with 1,012 total pins and an average of 202.4. Zach Fylling was next on the list for UPIKE in 27th place with a showing of 957 pins for a 191.4 average per game.
Josh Encarnacion finished just outside the top 30 in 33rd place overall with a score of 941 and am average of 188.2.
Bobby Sanch from Saginaw Valley State was the individual leader with 1,149 pins and an average of 229.8.
