Dr. Mahmoud speaks on peace in Islam
0On Thursday, Nov 14 the students of the University of Pikeville had a unique opportunity to come and listen to a well-spoken and knowledgeable man, Dr. Hisham Mahmoud, who gave a speech about his views on what peace in Islam entails.
Mahmoud is an Arabic lecturer at Princeton University, where he teaches all levels of modern and classical Arabic. He has studied Arabic with scholars in Egypt, Spain, Morocco and Mauritania. Mahmoud has held positions in Arabic at UCLA, Middlebury and Yale University. He has translated and edited several classical Islamic works on issues such as ethics, jurisprudence and legal theory and lectured nationwide on subjects pertaining to comparative religion.
Mahmoud gave his insight on not only what peace in Islam means to him but also his personal views on how Islam as a whole is seen across the world today and how he does not agree with categorizing Islam as a violent religion. He explained how the choices of certain violent individuals should not be enough to bring these thoughts together about a religion as a whole, and that the study of Islam is very much based on peace despite the thoughts of many.
