The University of Pikeville women’s basketball team took on the Shawnee State Bears Thursday, Feb. 1. Seniors Jamie Castle and Aundrea Matchen led the Bears in scoring with 11 points each. It wasn’t a great shooting night for the team, one of the main reasons they fell to Shawnee State 80-53.
Pikeville shot the ball 18 of 55 (32.7 percent) for the game, compared to a near 50 percent night coming from the Bears of Shawnee. Both teams rebounded the ball quite well as they tied on the glass. Pikeville couldn’t keep up with the fast paced offense of Shawnee as it scored in spurts and and went on runs. Shawnee had three players who scored 15 points – Hannah Miller, Madison Ridout and Bailey Cummins. Cummins also recorded a game high 12 assists to give her team a double-double for the night.
The Bears got out to a nice start with an 11-10 lead in the first quarter, but after that, Shawnee went off for 11 straight points to take a 21-11 lead. At the halftime break, Shawnee led 41-25 as they shot 50 percent compared to Pikeville’s 26 percent.
Shawnee State’s lead grew to a 28-point lead early in the fourth quarter, their biggest lead before ending the game with a 27-point victory.
