Pride speaks to social work students

UPIKE welcomed special guest speaker, Sheila Pride, LCSW, on Monday and Tuesday April 13-14. Pride was here to host a mindfulness and self-care training directed towards social worker students because of the high burnout rate in the profession.
During the training, Pride showed and explained to the SW students different yoga and breathing techniques to help keep their stress levels down and their impact on their clients high.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to bring Sheila Pride to our campus. I believe self-care and mindfulness is crucial to the social work profession as many social workers develop vicarious trauma while working with oppressed communities. Sheila’s experience and knowledge has assisted our students in developing healthy coping strategies and will impact their longevity in the field,” Lisa Thuer (MSW, M.Ed.), assistant professor of social work and coordinator of social work field education, said.
Pride works out of St. Louis, Mo., where she lives with her soon-to-be husband, and three children.
