BUS alumnus speaks about leadership

Monday, April 13, speaker Rick Newsom spoke to the students and leaders of the Coleman College of Business in Booth Auditorium.
Newsom is an alumnus of the University of Pikeville (then Pikeville College) class of 1976 who is currently the president for the eastern region of Community Trust Bank.
During his presentation, Newsom gave the students and professors some “Monday morning leadership.” Monday Morning Leadership is a novel about the business world and struggles that come along with it through the positives and negatives through relationships and financial performances. Motivation in any aspect always needs to be applied to life to keep a strong, lasting, positive outlook.
The novel touches the three main points in leadership to achieve: don’t allow distractions, accept all sorts of challenges, and set adequate daily goals. These points lead to an issue that needs to be understood which is leaders vs. managers. “Which one are you?” Newsom asked.
“From this point forward, you need to visualize the challenges as life long opportunities,” he said.
All these motivation and leadership roles sum up the do-right rule, which is seeing the big picture in life, more than just the money in your pocket.
