Senior Jeffery Justice, and the Student Government Association (SGA) held a campaign debate prior to the president ail elections. On Tuesday, April 14, presidential candidates, Collan McCoy and Joseph Holland, went head-to-head in an intense debate. The debate took place in the Armington building in front of a number of UPIKE SGA members and students.
McCoy introduced his vice presidential running mate, Katie Halsey, and Holland introduced his vice presidential candidate, Antwan Jacobs. They were given two-three minutes to make an opening statement. After the opening statements, Holland chose heads in a coin toss and elected to go first.
While answering many questions from Justice, other committee members, and general members, both men seemed to be at ease and comfortable with their answers and proposals for the upcoming academic year.
In the final thoughts, Holland talked about his hard work on his online social practice show and also went on to say that he would take SGA global. However, McCoy said that he didn’t want to change anything in SGA, but wanted to keep SGA going and let the people’s voices be heard.
McCoy said, “It was a hard fought debate. Poncho is a great guy and an amazing friend. He came out with some great answers and some great ideas. I think I did pretty well in articulating my ideas and goal for SGA, as did Poncho. No matter what happens on Monday, I really look forward to working with Poncho with SGA in the future, furthering my ambitions at this great institution, to be a voice for my peers, and most importantly the people at this university, the students.”
Overall, UPIKE’s 2015 SGA presidential debate included good topics, great thoughts, and wonderful ideas for SGA’s future.

On Wednesday, April 15 at 4 p.m., McCoy was named the 2015-2016 Student Government Association president. Halsey will be vice president.
