The University of Pikeville Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) went to the PBL Spring Conference at Georgetown College, April 11 and 12. There were different workshops conducted over two days, including personal finance, dress for success, résumé building, and March of Dimes, which is PBL’s national charity.
The UPIKE students from PBL won 16 awards. Courtney Collins placed second in Cost Accounting and second in Computer Application. Andrea Guzman placed second in Business Decision Making (Team). Adam Hall placed first in Macroeconomics and third in Accounting Principles. Sara Hall placed third in Impromptu Speaking.
Jeffery Justice placed first in Future Business Executive and second in Financial Concepts. Lauren May placed third in Computer Applications. Ricky Martin placed first in Job Interview and second in Justice Administration. Andrea Robinette placed third in Marketing Concepts. Blake Scroggins placed first in Cost Accounting and second in Business Decision Making (Team).
PBL also brought in Chapter Awards, third place in Outstanding Local PBL Chapter and third place in Largest Local Chapter Membership. Phi Beta Lamba is the largest collegiate business student organization in the world. PBL prepares students for careers in business and business-related fields. The purpose of PBL is for college students to learn about that business aspect of life.
This aspect is important no matter what your major is and there are valuable workshops at the conferences that are unmatched in any other student organization. Andrea Guzman, senior, is the president of Phi Beta Lamba and her main goals for the year were to focus on fundraising and raising membership. To become a member of PBL, all a student has to do is sign up.
There is dues of $30 to pay for national, state and local dues. Although, Guzman informs that if there is anyone who is unable to pay the dues that they would need to speak with her or Lois Rogers, PBL advisor, before deciding not to participate.
“PBL is open to all majors, and I encourage everyone to join. Even though this has been a rebuilding year, UPIKE had one of the largest showings at each conference this year. We hope to increase membership every year in order to increase our chances of having more participants in the national competition. This year we had nine students qualify for nationals,” said Guzman.
