UPIKE Theatre takes New York
0written by Christen Fraley
On July 29, 10 of UPIKE’s theatre students along with their professor, Kim Willard, went on an adventure to New York City. While there, the students participated in workshops with professionals Danny Gorman, Ken Urso, Jack Cummings, and Brian Rhineheart. These workshops included working on audition etiquette, headshots and resumes for the business, the business of theatre in general, and finally a move-it class where students were taught another away of plays written by movement.
After the workshops, the students attended professional musicals. They saw “Come from Away,” a musical that follows a small town called Gander, Newfoundland, that took care of the 39 planes that landed there during 9/11.
“Spongebob Squarepants,” the musical, was another show the students saw, and it’s about a yellow sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea who has to save his town Bikini Bottom from a volcano.
Finally, they saw “Anastasia,” the musical about an orphan girl named Anya trying to find who she is by the help of two con men who convince her she is the long-lost princess.
The students also visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. On Aug. 3, they returned to Kentucky, and they are now moving forward with their upcoming play for this fall semester.
UPIKE Theatre will be producing “Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” Updates for show dates and times will be coming soon.
