On Thursday, Sept. 20, the University of Pikeville held the annual paint your hands to take a stand against violence event on the bridge. There were five paint colors for partcipants to choose, and each color represented a different issue. Blue stood for religious and language violence. Red represented self-harm and addiction. Green stood for the environment. Purple recognized sexual and domestic violence. Yellow stood for war and terrorism. Lauren Piotrowski, freshman, said, “I feel like this was a really cool event because there’s so much violence in the world, and I feel like if we all take a stand as one at UPIKE, then maybe we can make a difference. I also think it’s really cool that we got to choose the different colors towards the different types of violence and stand for it. I chose purple because too many I see domestic violence, and I know how hard it is for someone to get out of it, or even for people watching to do something. So, I thought this was an awesome way of bringing everyone together to try and stand up and fight for the same thing and I hope we can actually make a difference and do something about it.” The event was organized by Chaplain Rob Musick as part of Peace and Nonviolence Week. Many students took part in this event and now the hands of the Bears cover a whole wall showing their stand against violence.
