Art Gallery features Appalachian photographer
0Staff Report
This fall the University of Pikeville’s Weber Art Gallery is set to feature “How to Get Home Again,” an exhibit of Roger May’s photography. May, whose work showcases Appalachia, is no stranger to the mountains.
Based in Charleston, W.Va., he is an Appalachian American photographer and writer who has been featured in the New York Times, the Guardian, the Atlantic, Al Jazeera America, National Geographic and many others. His work tells the narrative of Appalachia through a unique perspective, often focusing on commonly overlooked scenes from everyday life.
“Roger May’s photography is a quiet reflection on Appalachian stories,” said UPIKE Professor of Art Patricia Kowalok. “By choosing these views, Mr. May elevates the kudzu, the rail cars, the every man and woman to subjects that speak to the audience about the strong, resilient, and at times magical nature of being from and identifying as Appalachian.”
The exhibit will run from August 20 through October 10. The community is invited to a reception for the artist on Wednesday, September 12, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m in Weber Art Gallery, located on the second floor of Record Memorial Building on UPIKE’s campus.
