On Saturday, April 21, the University of Pikeville’s BSU participated in the state’s first Black Student Union conference.
The conference took place in Louisville and was hosted at the University of Louisville. The conference aimed to discuss collaborative efforts as well as providing organizational, professional, and leadership development training for students and advisors.
Seven schools throughout the Kentucky region participated including University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Eastern Kentucky University, Western Kentucky University, Bellarmine University, and Berea College.
At the conference, students spoke about the top three problems that face students and workers in the state. The University of Pikeville’s BSU Secretary-Elect, Victoria Dyson, spoke about the lack of diversity on and off campus and how people of color are less likely to get a job, and how they are not informed about such opportunities.
“I think it’s important to have this conference because it gives us opportunities to speak our minds, spread messages and make changes,” Dyson said.
