Men’s Tennis Topped by Cumberland 9-0

There were some hard-fought matches, but in the end, eighth-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) proved too much for the University of Pikeville men’s tennis team in a 9-0 loss on Saturday< March 31 at the Bob Amos Complex.
UPIKE (2-5, 1-3 MSC) nearly got off to a strong start when its top-seeded duo of Bailey Horne and Andres Alvarez lost 9-8 (5) against Thiago Lopes and Axel Lucich. The Phoenix (14-1, 2-0 MSC) had less trouble at the second and third seeds, winning 8-2 and 8-0, respectively.
In singles action, UPIKE’s No. 3 seed Devon Sgubin fared the best as he took Riccardo Ferraris to a 6-4, 7-6 (9) loss, pushing Cumberland too win another match past regulation.
While the Phoenix won the last three singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 shutouts, it wasn’t as easy at the top seed where their Ramon Puertolas beat Horne 6-2, 6-3 and second seeded Pau Grabuleda beat Alvarez 7-5, 6-2 at the second seed.
