UPIKE students prepare to compete in convention

Four UPIKE students practiced reading their papers before heading to the Kentucky Philological Convention. The event was hosted by Sigma Tau Delta last Wednesday night, Feb. 21, in the Chrisman Auditorium.
Dr. Riley James, coordinator of the English program, opened the night by introducing the fabulous four who would be representing UPIKE on their journey to the convention on March 21-24, Brandi Kessler, Rebecca Wilkes, Laura Keeton, and Hannah Adkins. All of the stories were captivating and also immensely descriptive.
Kessler started the charge with her story “Hooked.” After her was Wilkes, with an eerie story, “Broken Sanctuaries.” Next up was Keeton, who read “Troubles Ahead.” Last but certainly not least, Adkins shared her story, “The New Normal.”
“It is a personal story,” said Adkins. After chilling the crowd with her doctor’s visit, there wasn’t a single hand that didn’t clap in the entire auditorium. Adkins shared her feelings while facing her doctor’s visit and losing a third of her tongue due to cancer. The junior began writing this story last semester in her Advanced Composition Writing class.
