The University of Pikeville is set to launch an Honors Program for freshmen and sophomores beginning spring 2018.
On Tuesday, Nov. 7, co-directors Chandra Massner and Darla French along with honors committee chair Stephen Budney hosted a meeting to recruit current students for the new Honors Program. The program is designed for freshman and sophomore students who have achieved previous academic success.
The program is also recruiting incoming freshmen. They need to be in the top 10 percent of their class and have a 26 on the ACT. For sophomores and current UPIKE students, eligible students need to have a cumulative college GPA of a 3.5 or higher.
The program does not require additional coursework to complete. It is designed to be co-curricular in nature.
“This co-curricular program will encourage honors students to develop their skills in five areas: critical thinking, creativity, leadership, social justice, and experiential learning. We’re excited to begin,” said Massner, associate professor of communication.
This new program is set to begin in January and embed in the students’ everyday activities while also encouraging them to try new things and be active around campus. The students must earn 10 merits to complete the program by participating in co-curricular activities.
Students who complete the program will be recognized at graduation.
“I’m very interested in this program and want to know more about as time goes on. I think I am looking to join and be a part of something new at UPIKE,” said Mackenzie Fraley, sophomore.
Applications can be picked up from Massner, French, or Budney if you fit the criteria and want to join this program. They are due by Dec. 5. You can email honors@upike.edu for more information.
