The University of Pikeville Social Work program experienced an innovative learning opportunity at the Appalachian College of Pharmacy in Oakwood, Va., last week. This event is the Interprofessional Education Event (IPE) and was valuable for all the students that attended. UPIKE Social Work students had the opportunity to attend the event two days, Monday and Wednesday. Social Work students were broken into groups of two, where they teamed up with students from Kentucky College of Medicine, Kentucky College of Optometry and the Elliot School of Nursing. First, students were assigned into groups where they all met with their instructors. They started the session by introducing themselves to the members within their group that they would be working with for the day. Each member went through and talked about their program and why they chose to work in that specific field. Next, the instructor introduced them to the case that they would be focusing on for the day. The case was set for all the students to give their opinions and express how they would proceed. The medial students talked from a medical perspective. They discussed surgery options, and they tried figuring out what was wrong with the individual. The social work students talked from a critical perspective. They went through options and talked through how they would approach the situation. This learning event was beneficial for all the students who attended. Students learned how to work with other health professionals. They also learned a variety of new techniques and communication skills to help them in the future.
