On Saturday, Oct. 22, Rachel Little, assistant professor of communication, took 12 students from her Advanced Public Speaking class to Waverly Hills Sanatorium, an old tuberculous hospital, in Louisville, Ky., to give the students a real experience of storytelling in the actual setting the stories took place. “Waverly Hills had a projection that brought the building to life and made us all eager to see what were in the walls of the building,” said Alex Smith, senior. The students experienced a 30-minute tour of Waverly Hills Sanatorium. On the tour, they explored first, second, third, and fifth floors. While on each floor, tour guides gave bone-chilling stories about the events that happened while the Sanatorium was active. “The trip was an awesome experience. I’m lucky I got the chance to go and learn from the experience. I would definitely go again,” said Smith. Little was surprised how scared the students were at times. “It was a great storytelling experience. I can’t wait to take more students next year,” Little said. “Not only did we learn about storytelling, we also got to bond as classmates and make friends along the way,” Smith said.
