The University of Pikeville Cross Country team recently faced off at the 46th annual Patty Forgey Invitational.
The event hosted more than 900 runners, representing 55 schools. Runners ranged from college, junior high, middle school, and high school squads.
The event was hosted by the University of Rio Grande, and is one of the biggest events that the university hosts.
The UPIKE women placed third overall as a team, finishing with 70 points. The home team, Rio Grande, ran away with the title, while Ohio Valley finished second.
UPIKE senior, Molly Frank, ran 22:22:63 and finished 10th place overall. Sabrina Elliot almost made the top 10, sliding into a 12th place finish with a running a time of 23:51:01.
For the UPIKE men, Jonathan Sloas finished 17th with a time of 35:15.7. Backing up Sloas for the Bears was Chris Leadford in 19th place with a time of 39:30.5, Dalton Stiltner finishing 20th in 41:32.7, and Alex Robinson in 21st place with a showing of 44:53.5.
Due to a lack of runners, with only four competing, the men’s team did not post at team finish. Rio Grande took the title for the men’s side as well, despite Ohio Valley Alex Kitony being the individual champion with a time of 27:00:08.
The Bears will travel to Louisville next Saturday, Oct. 1 for the Greater Louisville Classic at EP Tom Sawyer State Park.
