The University of Pikeville has been constructing a new project that could possibly have a huge impact on the community. The Kentucky College of Optometry, the fourth college that has been added to the University of Pikeville, has officially begun its classes this fall and many students have great expectations for it.
“I expect this program to be on par or even better than a lot of the other optometry programs out there,” Garrett Kee, current optometry student, said.
Andrew Buzzelli, O.D., M.S., FAAO, and founding dean, leads the new program in developing and educating the future doctors of optometry. Looking forward, the Kentucky College of Optometry is providing the community with a new and adaptable educational program.
The new building where the classes will be held is currently under construction and is projected to open next semester. The program adds depth to the community as it has the potential to benefit and provide for the Appalachian area.
Kentucky is one of the two states that allow their optometrists to do specific types of eye surgery that would normally be done by an ophthalmologist. This gives the Kentucky College of Optometry an advantage and makes it a perfect opportunity for incoming students. Sixty students will be admitted per class each year, which makes this a competitive program.
Optometry is the study and specialization of the eye. The curriculum for this program includes classes such as anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. If you’re considering applying, you can find a link on the University of Pikeville webpage.
