Would you like to spend your summer conducting research? Nine UPIKE students will be doing so this summer. Amanda Arts, JoBeth Bingham, Kenneth Bowling, Logan Cline, Valerie Eversole, Timothy Finn, Dalton Hammond, Taylor Summers, and Austin Thacker were recently awarded a Colonel Lee B. Ledford scholarship from the Appalachian College Association to conduct research for the summer 2016. The Ledford Scholarship offers financial assistance for students enrolled at ACA institutions with summer research in the fields of laboratory and fieldwork, interviews, analyzing special collections, and participant observation. The scholarship gives students the opportunity to make $8.50 an hour, and an allotment of $1,000 for travel and equipment. Students in many disciplines have been supported in the past (English, sociology, history, biology, computer science, etc). Research proposals with a strong service component are welcome. “This is such a great experience. I highly recommend the Ledford Scholarship for anyone who would want some fieldwork in the area they’re studying for college,” Chris Ward, junior at UPIKE and 2015 recipient, said of his award. His project was compartmentalization of cIAP2 and cIAP2 During Degradation. Arts is excited to be conducting chemical research this summer. “I can’t wait to start on the project. This is a tremendous opportunity to gain research experince,” she said.
