For the second straight season, the top-seeded University of Pikeville women’s bowling team captured the MSC Championship after topping No. 3 Lindenwood-Belleville (Mo.) 4-3 on Saturday at Southern Lanes. The conference has been hosting bowling championships since the 2012-13 season and this is also the second straight season that the Bears have swept both the regular-season and tournament titles. UPIKE’s day started in the winner’s bracket semifinals where it beat No. 4 Cumberlands 4-3, followed by an easier 4-1 win over No. 2 Campbellsville in the winner’s finals of the double-elimination bracket. For Lindenwood-Belleville to claim the championship from the loser’s bracket, it would have to beat UPIKE twice in the final round. It nearly got a chance at it by playing the Bears back-and-forth in the first matchup. The best-of-seven series went the distance with the Bears claiming a 196-167 win in the seventh game. Starting at 10:15 a.m. ET, Lindenwood-Belleville was able to tally three wins to advance to the finals. The wins were over No. 7 Bethel (Tenn.), Cumberlands and No. 5 St. Catharine in the loser’s bracket finals. The win wraps up a successful championship event for UPIKE as Jenna Coldiron won the singles title on Friday, Katelyn Simpson was named bowler of the year, Ron Damron coach of the year, Angel West the league’s top freshman and Nicole Howe took champions of character honors.
