‘Mattress Girl’ captivates campus-wide

Recently UPIKE hosted “It’s On Us!” week, and one of the most talked about events was when a student chose to carry a mattress with her on campus to spread more awareness. Josie Stewart, senior, carried a mattress with quotes written on it that were discouraging to victims. Her goal was to show the campus some of the statements these victims often hear.
“Sometimes, after people in class move seats away from me, I try to think if it’d be better if I said nothing. Then, a girl comes up to me and tells me her story and thanks me for what I’m doing and for helping her get closure, and I wouldn’t want to change that for the world,” said Stewart.
Stewart also didn’t think that the stunt would receive as much coverage as it did.
“I didn’t really think it’d catch on as quick as it did. I mean, day one I did two interviews and by day two, I was on TV…”
Stewart hopes that her efforts help combat sexual assault, and she wants all those who have been personally affected by it to know that they are not alone.
