‘KYCOM Cares,’ a call to service
0Staff Report
On a mission of service, more than 140 medical students from the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) hosted a citywide community service day volunteering at 15 locations throughout Pikeville.
Students and faculty volunteers from clubs in KYCOM’s Student Government Association held activities throughout the city, including the Pikeville YMCA, Pike County Animal Shelter, Judi’s Place for Kids and Bob Amos Park. Students also hosted a KYCOM Wellness and Osteopathic Manipulative (OMT) clinic as the main event and a clinic for veterans hosted by the KYCOM Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons.
“KYCOM Cares Day 2015 was truly a special event. Our student body blanketed the city of Pikeville with volunteer events and the members of this community responded by not only graciously receiving our students, but also by joining us in our efforts. At each event, students were taken back by the gratitude expressed from the members of this community for our help and support,” said second-year medical student Travis Huffman, president of the Class of 2017.
The KYCOM Student Government Association logged more than 500 volunteer hours during the annual event and registered more than 200 donors for a bone marrow drive.
