Water conditions, weather affect campus, classes

For the first time in more than a decade, UPIKE cancelled classes for a week during the recent winter storm. Record snowfall, ice, rain, and extremely low temperatures created miserable conditions for Pike County.
While classes were not held, there were still many students on campus living in the residence halls. Sunday, Feb. 22, people throughout Pike County were shocked to find there was a county-wide water shortage. The water was off for two days, causing the university to cancel classes again, Monday, Feb. 23.
Campus personnel helped by giving out waterbottles and checking on the students throughout the day.
Overall, everyone came together to make the best of the conditions.
“I … want to commend our students for their campus safety while having a little fun in the snow. I have witnessed many of our students helping to clear paths and digging out automobiles for friends,” President James Hurley said in a statement.
