Students attend women’s symposium

Lois Rogers, assistant professor of accounting, and seven young female business students attended the 16th annual Big Sandy Women’s Symposium on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Rogers was contacted by Community Trust Bank who was willing to sponsor 12 female business students that were interested in attending. Twelve students were signed up and ready to go, but due to weather and water issues, only seven were able to attend. Among those were: Elisa Lopez, Mona Branham, Sara Hall, Kayla Stamper, Lindsay Moncsko, Nicole Howe, and Karlee Evans.
The symposium featured several different speakers and workshops as well as a booth set up for businesses where students could collect free items. A lunch was also provided along with some lunchtime entertainment by Chelsea Stepp, an indie-pop singer from Warfield, Ky.
The highlight of the symposium came late in the day with motivational speaker Polly Pitchford.
Rogers said, “She was energetic and dedicated to her work. She was an excellent public speaker and talked about focusing on ways to relieve stress.”
The theme of the symposium was energy to succeed and Pitchford capitalized on that.
Student Sara Hall said, “She had us get up and dance and had us yelling stuff out. She interacted with the audience a lot. I would definitely go back next year.”
“I’m thankful for Community Trust Bank for allowing students this opportunity. I look forward to taking a group of young ladies each year,” Rogers said.
