Men’s & Women’s MSC Basketball Tournament Brackets Announced

The UPIKE cheerleading team opens the MSC tournament with the MSC cheer competion. The team hopes to win its third consecutive MSC championship against five conference opponents Wednesday, March 4.
Regular-season play of Mid-South Conference men’s and women’s basketball is in the books and the brackets for both of this week’s MSC Tournaments in Frankfort, Ky., at the Frankfort Convention Center have been announced.
The University of Pikeville men earned the No. 1 seed after tie-breaker procedures with No. 2-seed Campbellsville.
The Bears and Tigers are co-MSC Regular-Season Champions, but after both teams split with third-seeded Georgetown, UPIKE has the better record against fourth-seeded Cumberlands.
UPIKE will play its first game of the tour nament at 2 p.m. on Friday, but won’t know its opponent until No. 8 Cumberland (Tenn.) and No. 9 Shawnee State (Ohio) complete a play-in game at Noon on Thursday.
On the women’s side, the Bears finished in a three-way tie for third place in the standings with Shawnee State and Cumberland. Shawnee State took the third seed after the tiebreaker and UPIKE earned the No. 4 seed. It’s the highest seed for Pikeville since also being No. 4 in 2009.
The Bears open postseason play at 4 p.m. on Thursday and would play either top-seeded Campbellsville or No. 8-seed St. Catharine if they advance to the semifinals on Saturday.
UPIKE has never won the women’s tournament championship since joining the league in the 2000-01 season, while the men have won it three times, including last season’s which was played in Lebanon, Tenn.
