J-Board supports UPIKE students

With more than a half-dozen cases seen this semester alone, Director of the First Year Experience and Student Activities Emily Romito feels the need is greater than ever for students to know of the existence and purpose for the University of Pikeville Judicial Review Board (J-Board).
Composed of a student chair appointed by the UPIKE SGA as well as two additional students handpicked by the chair and two professors, the J-Board is responsible for handling appeals of decisions made by students after the dean of the university makes a decision. Romito’s duty to the J-Board is to guide the chair through judicial protocol.
The main duty of the board is to “do what is best for the students and what is best for our campus,” according to Romito.
The board hears all sides of the case, views all evidence and hears testimony of all witnesses brought forth and votes on a decision. If, after the J-Board’s decision, new evidence is brought forth, a final appeal may be brought to the university president. The president’s decision is final and cannot be appealed further.
Often cited within cases is the on-campus use of alcohol and recreational drugs, whether in cases of possession or from other conflicts and incidents either directly or indirectly caused by the consumption.
