The UPIKE Lady Bears softball team lost both of its games against the Cumberland on Friday, April 4 in Lebanon, Tenn.
UPIKE lost game one with a score of 3-0.
“I’m so proud of my team for pushing as hard as they have. They never stop and never give up. I cannot ask for anything more than to know that I have a strong team standing behind me. I would do anything for those girls, and I am glad to finally have a team that would do the same for me,” Sydney Morris, sophomore pitcher, said.
In game two, Brandi Jo Howard, junior centerfielder, scored on a Bulldog error in the first inning, making the score 1-0. Unfortunately, Cumberland came back in the third inning and scored four runs to take control of the game. Within the remainder of the game, Cumberland scored three more runs, while UPIKE was only able to score one more, also being from an error.
The Lady Bulldogs outhit the Bears in the first game 6-5, and also in the second game 13-6.
On Saturday, April 5, the Lady Bears traveled to Columbia, Ky., to take on the Lady Raiders from Lindsey Wilson College.
“We didn’t come out on top, but we never quit,” Sarah Kinney, junior infielder, said. “I think it says a lot about the character of a team when they are down in the 7th inning and still come out swinging.”
Lindsey Wilson ended up winning game one with a score of 3-1.
Game two ended a little differently than was hoped. The Lady Raiders pitcher, Jordan Hood, did not allow one hit and had nine strikeouts within five innings.
Morris pitched in game one giving up nine hits with only three runs.
“Our team as a whole is growing,” Kayla Brown, junior catcher/outfielder, said. “We walk on the field and give everything we have until the last inning, which is why you still see us hitting in the top of the 7th inning.”
Barnes gave up six hits with six runs in the first inning which eventually lead to her being pulled from the game. Morris and Miranda Owens, sophomore pitcher, finished off the game.
“Defensively, we played really well,” Emily Castle, senior infielder, said. “Offensively, we had our ups and downs and ran into some good pitching. Overall, we are playing good softball. We just need to catch a break.”
