Volleyball falls to Campbellsville

On Tuesday, Sept. 4, the UPIKE volleyball team was swept by the Campbellsville Tigers, 26-24, 25-14, 25-22. The match was the Bears’ Mid-South Conference opener.
Pikeville went on a 7-0 run in the first set with a 15-7 lead. Campbellsville slowly regained points, but the Bears were one point away from taking the first set, 24-20. The Tigers came back on a 6-0 run, not only winning the set 26-24 but also taking all momentum.
UPIKE couldn’t get the momentum back in the second set. The Bears’ hitting percentage dropped to 0% with 6 kills and 6 errors.
The third set was neck and neck. The Tigers held the lead for most of the set until UPIKE got up 22-21. Campbellsville still had all momentum. The Tigers took the set, winning the game.
Maria Coelho, Sonia Flendrich, and Kaite Johnson led Campbellsville with 12, 9, and 8 kills. Noelani Simpson led the team with 11 kills and Amanda Gooding had 6.
“We started really strong and let the game slip through our fingers. We’re gonna come back stronger and more prepared to beat them for the next time we play,” Simpson said.
