The University of Pikeville Choir is gearing up for a lot of events this semester. Professor Jonathan Schott, director of choral activities at UPIKE, said that the choir is “upping their game,” this semester by, “extending our abilities and amount of entertainment.”
The focus of the choir this semester is its first concert which is happening on Oct. 19 in Booth Auditorium. It will be performing 14-15 pieces.
Elijah Purvis, sophomore, said, “Personally, I’m excited for it.’ The choir will also be performing Oct. 15 at Belfry for an awareness concert for Lost Pregnancies. It will be performing one piece at 6 p.m.
Future events will be taking place on Nov. 11 with a performance at the Expo Center called “Hope for the Mountains,” which will be a “community participation,” said Schott, where they hope to have a 3-400-person choir. On Nov. 29, the choir as well as the band will be having a concert. And rounding out the semester will be Dec. 4 with a mini concert at 11 a.m. in Booth Auditorium followed by the full winter concert in the same space at 7:30 p.m.
The semester also brought in a few new faces to the choir.
Bailey Ratliff, freshman, said, “I’m not used to being in choir. I used to be in choir in middle school but dropped it in high school. The people are nice, and Mr. Schott is, too. He motivates you. It feels like a family.”
