UPIKE COM and sports management majors work with local YMCA

For some majors at UPIKE, a field specific internship is mandatory in order to graduate. Students find unpaid or paid positions that apply to their majors, and it counts as three required credit hours towards graduation. For UPIKE’s communication and sports management majors, the YMCA provides a perfect platform to fulfill this requirement.
Three former and current UPIKE student-athletes are working as unpaid interns at the Pikeville Area YMCA. The group consists of one communication major and two sports management majors. Kawayne Hunter, senior, and Tait Tortenson, senior, are sports management majors while Terrell White, senior, is the communication major.
The three work together as a team to coordinate and promote sports programs. White handles items such as posters and flyers and contacting people while Tortenson and Hunter come up with specifics of the programs including coordinating coaches, practice times, game dates, and other logistics.
“It’s great to get work experience while being able to work with some of your friends. It’s pretty laid back, but we get a lot of work done, and I am learning a lot,” said White.
