Academic Assistance Center helps students

A new semester has begun at the University of Pikeville, and with a new semester comes new classes. Located on the ground floor of the Allara Library (room 010), the Academic Assistance Center (AAC) aids with studying, homework, test prep, papers, speeches, and the content skills (Math, Science, Writing). It is open from noon to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday. “Please come by and meet the tutors! Come in with a friend and study together!” said Libby Shockey, AAC coordinator. The mentors that work in the center are eager to help those who need it. “Everybody is nice, and you can tell that they know what they are doing. I was always able to get my questions answered,” said Lais Marcelino, a senior who frequents the AAC. Cassie Gearles, who has tutored in the AAC for three semesters, enjoys teaching others. “It gives me great joy when I see a student who has been struggling to grasp a concept finally understand that concept. It’s been what inspired me to become a professor,” said Gearles. Those who have an interest in tutoring next semester need to have a GPA of 3.0 or better, a B or better in the courses they want to tutor, and a recommendation from a faculty person.
