On Friday, March 23, UPIKE hosted K-Love, the poet. K-Love is an internationally renowned Spoken Word Artist/Motivational Speaker who made her debut in 2003 in the heart of Chicago’s vibrant poetry scene.
She shared stories of her youth and the struggles she faced in her upbringing while also performing some of her favorite and most popular poems, including, “Million Dollar Melanin,” which is currently trending on the internet and empowering people of color with over 900k views.
“I think the biggest reward in travelling around and sharing my art—is being received and being listened to, like, people actually giving me their attention and after the poetry is over and them coming up and embracing me. I think that’s the most fulfilling part,” she said.
She also gave some advice to other aspiring poets and writers.
“I would say write what’s real, be honest. We got enough fake reality stuff going on out here,” K-Love said.
