February is a special month for the country as it marks progression for the nation. For many people, they brush it off when they see advertisements, posters, or billboards about it, but for a large community, it speaks volumes about the history and culture throughout time. Across the country, universities, high schools, and cities put on events to showcase African-American customs, cultures, and roots.
At the University of Pikeville there are events all over campus during the month of February to promote Black History Month. On Feb. 15, the university hosted an event called the African Dance. This event depicted the culture and roots of Africa.
“It reminded me of the Black Panther in the sense of the African American roots in them both. I come from an African American background, so these things speak volumes to me,” said Jalen Stone, UPIKE student.
At the end of the day, this was entertaining and quite a show, but it was much deeper than that. This was an insight on African American roots by looking directing at their customs and rituals.
