UPIKE runs for charity in 5K

Saturday, Oct. 15, the University of Pikeville hosted a 5K run/walk in downtown Pikeville. The race was organized and run by faculty members, students, and alumni. The race was open to the community and anyone who wanted to a part of this wonderful cause. This race was a charitable event for the University’s Scholar House Program. The Scholar House of Central Appalachia is an educational program with a housing outlet. This program provides housing and other substantial resources to single parents who wish to obtain a college degree. They also provide an onsite Early Childhood Education Center and Academic Services Center. This amazing program is beneficial toward any individual facing the challenges of being a single parent. They are providing housing, academic advising, family support services, and other resources to help these single parent students earn a college degree. Awards were handed out at the end of the race to congratulate the hard work from the participants. The overall male winner was Mason Webb, who ran a time of 18:56.8. He is the son of President Burton Webb at the University. He was followed in by Randall Watts, who took second place with the time of 21:05.9, and Leonard Burks fought hard for a third place finish by running a time of 21:36.0. The overall female winner was Haley Damron, who ran a time of 27:19.4. The goals of this race is to help the community by promoting fitness, enjoying the laughs, and mainly raising money for charity.
