On Oct. 21-23, Andrew Reed, assistant professor of film and media arts, took three film and media students to the PUSH! Film Festival in Bristol, Tenn. The three students that traveled with him were David Chapman, Adrian Smith and Aaron Asbury. “I thought this would be a great one to bring a few students to come and check it out,” Reed said. Chapman and Asbury started the film festival at the University of Pikeville. Reed wanted them to see what a film festival outside of the university is like since neither of them had been to an actual film festival. “It was important for me to have these students check out the film festival,” Reed said. “It was an amazing experience to be able to go and meet all these wonderful filmmakers,” Asbury said. “Not only were we able to see Professor Reed win, we got to meet so many talented people.” A film festival is a screening of movies made by independent filmmakers. Reed had two films that were shown at the film festival. One film, I’m with Phil, is a documentary about 20 people who shared the same name as Reed’s hometown, Phil Campbell, Ala., that came together to rebuild after a tragedy. The other, Titanic Boy, is a profile documentary on a young man obsessed with the Titanic. Reed’s I’m With Phil won the Best Documentary Film award at the festival.
