UPIKE holds art gallery reception

The University of Pikeville held a reception in Weber Art Gallery on Sept. 2. This reception was for Paula Smith, UPIKE instructor of art, who was showcasing her artwork. The reception was open to the public, and she had a variety of art pieces on display. Her artwork was inspired by where she came from. “I grew up in Appalachia, and I’m a mountain girl. Everything about me is embedded in these works of art,” Smith said. Smith has been creating art her entire life. In 3rd grade her teacher had a contest to draw Abraham Lincoln’s cabin, and she won, and it got put on the bulletin board and everybody told her how wonderful it was, so she continued art. It shows how passionate she is about her art. Every piece of art Smith creates comes from her stories and her life experiences. This was Smith’s only show for this year. She’s working on a new series, and when she gets those pieces done, she will have another show here at Weber Art Gallery. Smith also sells her pieces and she has prints available.
