First year spotlight: Meet Avery & Miles

A freshman that joined the UPIKE Bear family is 18-year-old Tashjana Avery. She is from Louisville, Ky.
Avery came to the University of Pikeville to get away from friends and family. She said that it is fun and not what she expected, but it is good to be boring. Her major is nursing. She graduated from Liberty High School and played basketball and flag football.
Avery also played AAU Basketball for Kentucky Lady Retro’s, which is one of the best teams in Louisville. Lady Retro’s is coached by Armon Wilson who has led them to nationals every year.
Avery is a member of the women’s University of Pikeville Bears Basketball team. Her position is shooting guard. She said she needs to work on her offensive game.
Her favorite color is blue, and she hangs with some of her friends for fun. In the next 10 years she sees herself as a traveling nurse. In the next five years, she sees herself working in an emergency room. Avery has plans to move out of Kentucky when she graduates.
Another freshman that recently joined the Bear family is Tellis Miles Kennedy II. He is from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the vice president of the Black Student Union. His college goal was playing football because he enjoys the game.
So far, his experience at the University of Pikeville has been enjoyable and enjoys his classes, staff, and his teammates.
Tellis said that he did not expect that there would not be much to do.
Miles’ life goal is to get a degree in business administration and then furthering his education with an MBA. His favorite color is blue.
In the next 10 years, he hopes to own his own business and maybe have one child. His goal in the next five years is to finish is MBA and get a job.
